Differences with peers

What is it like to be different?

I've always felt "different" to my peers, but only recently have I started to dig down into what that might actually mean. Beyond a general sense of alienation, in what specific ways have I felt "different"? And what are some specific effects that these feelings had on my choices and self-esteem? I'd like to go deeper and I think it might help to have your perspectives to jog my brain towards some new thoughts.

Share questions:

  • Have you ever felt different to your peers? In what ways? Any specific examples to share?
  • Looking closer at one of those differences, how did it (or your/others' perception of it) influence your self-esteem?
  • Are there any differences that negatively impacted your self-esteem pre-identification, but positively impact your self-esteem today?
  • Might it be easier now pinpoint differences thanks to learning autism-related vocabulary about sensory experiences, executive function, and other aspects of autistic experience? How so?
  • Has being in autism communities changed the way you think about your differences with peers at all?
  • Any tools, strategies, or resources that helped you with this topic?
  • Anything else to share?
