About Autistic Women's Group

AWG is an online support group for late-identified autistic women and all other members of marginalized genders.

The meeting format is designed to reduce the sensory, social, and executive function burdens that normally come with socializing. Our members are clinically-diagnosed, self-diagnosed, and questioning. AWG is volunteer-led and not associated with any other umbrella organization or company.

Please consider joining us on Zoom. Our member profile is inclusive. Meetings are always free and no registration is required. Members share by speaking or typing. We have many members who come just to listen. You never have to turn on you mic or camera if you don't want to. You don't have to come to every meeting, or stay the whole meeting, in order to be a full member. Disclosure of diagnosis/gender identity is welcome but never required for participation.

I hope you enjoy AWG Shares Magazine. And please do join us in a meeting sometime if you can.

About the Cover

by Sol Iacob

This cover is a photograph I took of Chagall's stained windows in the Art Institute of Chicago. I managed to see these right before the museum was closing. They were located in what seemed like a pretty abandoned corner, in an otherwise empty big room. I always had an aversion to Chagall's paintings, but I didn't dislike the stained glass. I like the idea of an art that filters light instead of reflecting it. The picture actually shows me details I hadn't noticed.

We are always in need of covers! Submit a cover, or an image that you would like to see on a cover, at https://autisticwomensgroup.com/submit

Poetry

if my daughter is autistic, too
by Lauren Hackett

the societal systems that overwhelm

will be no match for my wings, sprouted

in the fertile dark of social misunderstanding.

she’ll wear them to face

big emotions and unkind people,

affirmed by the feathery heat

of all her mother’s overcome.

when senses fail, she’ll know a new sense:

the uniquely autistic sense

of being cool as shit.

Music

Electronic music track - "Are you real?"

By Valerie

Content note: The accompanying video contains frequent glitch and  flickering visual effects, which may be uncomfortable or inaccessible  for people with visual sensitivities.

I wrote this track during a period of sheer exhaustion, instability, and  recurring nightmares after yet another manipulative, coercive, and  controlling relationship dynamic.

Some questions I was struggling with were:
With the truth of the relationship finally revealing itself, how fragmented has my sense of reality become?
Can I handle how unsettling things have always been beneath the surface?
How can I steady myself, and move forward?

Because you don't have the energy or the words to explain.

Most people in your life don’t understand autistic burnout — what it is, why it happens, or what actually helps. This workshop does the explaining for you.

We’ll get deep into what autistic burnout really is and it can take so friggin’ long to recover.

Including why it happens, what it feels like, why common advice for burnout and depression don’t help (or can be actively counterproductive), and what is needed for genuine, sustainable recovery.

Share it with family, clinicians, employers, or anyone who wants to support you but doesn’t know how.

Or get a better idea yourself of what is normal, what to expect, and how to help yourself.

For autistics and their family, clinicians, and employers
